President’s Report

The Club is going to participate in a couple of dog events -

AKC Canine Experience (in conjunction with Responsible Dog Owner Day) - Saturday, September 20th in Stillwater

and

Paws In The Park (Benefiting the Humane Society of Tulsa) - Saturday, October 18th, Jenks Riverwalk

We plan to have meet-the-breeds, Canine Good Citizen Tests, grooming and handling demos, how to enter a dog show and any other ideas YOU might have!  If you would like to participate in either (or both!) events contact Lori Finlayson - dalmino@aol.com (Stillwater event) or Charles & Phyllis Simmons - simmons8243@sbcglobal.net (Paws In The Park) or myself.  Maybe we can do some carpooling for the Stillwater event.  Volunteer - events like this are always fun!

Also, the Club Awards Banquet is being moved to Saturday, January 17, 2009 to avoid the Christmas glut of parties.  It will be a brunch at 1:00 PM at Michael V's (Memorial Drive & 103rd) and the Club will pay $20 towards each member's meal so plan to attend.  Plaques for title winners will be given out at the banquet - the time frame for qualifying for a plaque will remain the same - July 1, 2007 through July 2008.

And I'm sure many of you are aware that Tulsa is going to open it's first Dog Park and MCKC has voted to donate $600 for the poop bag dispensers.  Just our small way of supporting this great idea for the city.  MCKC members also voted to donate $500 to Take The Lead - an organization that helps members of the dog show community who are in need of financial aid.

We had our first meeting with 24 members and guests in attendance at the Hardesty Library last month and it is a wonderful site!  Large room with a sound and video system - try to attend a meeting and check out this new meeting place.

Art Show Time is Here!

Hard to believe, but it is that time of year again. It is time to start recruiting art from our area teachers and their talented students!  Teachers need to contacted early in the school year so our art show can be included in their lesson plans.  If you have a school near you, please pick up a flier at our upcoming meeting to distribute.  Art teachers, elementary teachers and all students are encouraged to participate.  Last year we expanded our contest to the high school grades.  Our theme and requirements will be included in the information.  Assistance with the art show is always needed and volunteers are welcomed. We have wonderful sponsors this year:  Arbys, Pooches and Mag Rags!   Be a part of the excitement in encouraging these students to express their love of dogs.

Meeting Refreshment Schedule

July 8, 2008 MEMBERSHIP MEETING MINUTES

The meeting was called to order at 7:04 pm by President Karen Gibson.  Guests, Mike and Donna Bennett, Carol Minden, Bonnie Parker, Janine Winings, Jim Harber and Mac Finlayson introduced themselves to the club.  Show wins were announced by members.

Karen presented a plaque to Charles Simmons for his service as past MCKC president.

President – Karen sent Companion Dog School for allowing us to have the Junior training classes at their facility free of charge.  The board voted to participate in the Humane Society's Paws in the Park in Jenks on October 18.  Volunteers will be needed.  Karen presented AKC’s Lifetime Achievement Awards nominees.  The membership voted to cast our ballot for Dr Robert D Smith for Conformation, Kenneth A Buxton for Companion Events and Mary Jo Trimble for Performance.  The board also voted to participate in AKC’s Meet the Breed event to be held on September 20th in Stillwater.  Karen passed around a sign up sheet for both upcoming events.

Vice-President – Lori Finlayson reported on the success of the Junior Handling classes. She reported that several of the participants expressed a desire to have another class so we will be looking for a location for a fall class.  The Tulsa World plans to do a feature on the junior handlers and will hopefully be in conjuction with the Tulsa Cluster.

Flyers for the Art Show will be sent out shortly after the start of the new school year.  Sponsors so far are Arby’s, Mag Rags and Pooches.

Lori also requested ideas for publicity for the fall Cluster.

Treasurer – presented by Barbara Jeleski.  Checking balance is $3,588.08, Agility balance is $11,712.08 and CD’s in the amounts of $11,318.63 and $17,103.07.

Membership Committee – Membership applications were read for Bonnie Parker and Ellen Lucas.  They will be voted on at the August meeting.

AKC Delegate – Delegate Karen Gibson reported that podcast will be available from AKC.

New Business:  Barbara Jeleski made a motion that MCKC donate $600.00 to the city of Tulsa to purchase two poop bag dispensers for the new dog park.  Sandy Wyman seconded and the motion was carried.

In response to recent correspondence from the Take The Lead organization, Karen researched the website to see who were recipients of grants from this organization.  This information is not disclosed to the general public on the site.  Following discussion concerning making a donation to Make the Lead a motion was made by Lori Finlayson to donate $500.00 and seconded by Julie Ziegler.  Motion carried.

The awards dinner will be Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Michael V’s.  The dinner will actually be brunch at 1:00.  The board voted to pay $20.00 per member toward the purchase of dinner.  The qualifying time for awards plaques will still be July 1 throught June 30.

One day the old German Shepherd starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a leopard heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old German Shepherd thinks, 'Oh, oh! I'm in deep doo-doo now!' Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the leopard is about to leap, the old German Shepherd exclaims loudly, 'Boy, that was one delicious leopard! I wonder, if there are any more around here?'

Hearing this, the young leopard halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees. 'Whew!' says the leopard, 'That was close! That old German Shepherd nearly had me!'

Meanwhile, a monkey who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the leopard. So, off he goes, but the old German Shepherd sees him heading after the leopard with great speed, and figures that something must be up.

The monkey soon catches up with the leopard, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the leopard.

The young leopard is furious at being made a fool of and says, 'Here, monkey, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!

Now, the old German Shepherd sees the leopard coming with the monkey on his back and thinks, 'What am I going to do now?', but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old German Shepherd says...
'Where's that damn monkey? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another leopard!

Moral of this story
...

Don't mess with the old dogs.... age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery! BS and brilliance only come with age and experience.
